About Buenos Aires
Its name alone, which in English means Fair Winds, can tell you that Buenos Aires is no ordinary city. Take a tour of this capital city of Argentina and see what keeps tourists and locals alike awed and amazed. You probably wouldn’t think of starting your day tour at the Cementerio de la Recoleta, but really, it’s no creepy place. Here you will find the resting place of Eva Peron, wife to Argentina’s President Juan Peron, as well as numerous mausoleums of Argentina’s rich families, stunning works of architecture, and a flower garden.
Speaking of the Perons, surely, you would want to see the celebrated balcony of the Presidential Palace. You may then head on to Casa Rosada and discover for yourself history unfolding right before you. Opposite Casa Rosada is Cabildo, an old building that also has historical connotation. Fronting the building are series of arches that used to enclose the plaza during the May Revolution some centuries ago. The shifting of the guards happen every hour, and this you must see! The guards still wear the traditional uniforms that date as far back as 1800.
Take a trip down Palermo Viejo district, too, a fascinating spot for those hungry for a taste of Argentinean culture. Lining up the district’s cobblestone streets are bookstores, bars, and specialty stores. It is also here where you can find the La Bombonera Stadium and the National Immigration Museum. Next, stop at the Cathedral Metropolitana. Here is housed the tomb of the great hero General Jose de San Martin who valiantly fought for the freedom of Argentina from the Spanish rule. While in Buenos Aires, make sure to stop by La Boca, which means “the mouth”. Characterized by colorful structures, La Boca is home to football great Diego Maradona. Another popular landmark to see in Buenos Aires is Floralis Generica located on the United Nations Square, a working metal sculpture of a flower powered by the rays of the sun.
Measuring 127 meters wide, Avenida 9 de Julio is one of the world’s widest avenues. A structure built to honor the Independent Argentina, the structure, spans from Retiro district to Constitucion. You can choose to stay at one of the many cheap hotels in the city. If you are bringing kids along with you, take them to Buenos Aires Zoo which houses more than 350 species of animals, many of them exotic.
